Lacy Clay Backs
Kamala Harris for President
“Kamala has the courage, vision and backbone to fight for equal justice, restore our democracy, and unite the American people.”
WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Wm. Lacy Clay (D) Missouri today endorsed Senator Kamala Harris (D) California for president. He is the fourth member of the powerful Congressional Black Caucus to back Senator Harris and the third to endorse her presidential campaign in less than a week,. Clay cited her record of fighting for working families, her steadfast defense of voting rights, and her passion for empowering women and minorities to take their rightful place at the tables of economic opportunity and political power. Mr. Clay, Missouri’s senior Democrat, also lauded Senator Harris’ courageous push for criminal justice reform to end over-incarceration and eliminate sentencing disparities for African Americans.
“Kamala has the courage, vision and backbone to fight for equal justice, restore our democracy, and unite the American people.” said Clay. “She shares my passion to strive for equal justice for all, instead of just for some. And she has always stood with me as we strive to lift up underrepresented Americans by making the American dream achievable for millions who have been left out and left behind. Kamala is a progressive champion for real criminal justice reform who created a groundbreaking re-entry program for ex-offenders at the height of the misguided ‘tough on crime’ era. She also shares my fight to defend voting rights, raise the minimum wage, provide healthcare as a universal right, and grow incomes for low and moderate income families. America needs Kamala Harris as our next President.”
“I’m incredibly honored to have Lacy Clay’s support,” said Harris. “Lacy has a passion for public service and he is a tireless advocate for equity and opportunity of all Americans. I look forward to working with him to lift up their voices through this campaign and from White House.
The Clay Campaign has produced more Democratic votes and won more elections than any other political organization in the history of the State of Missouri. Congressman Lacy Clay’s 2008 endorsement of then Senator Barack Obama, propelled the Obama Campaign to an upset victory in the Missouri Presidential Primary. Clay is the first elected official from Missouri to endorse in the Democratic presidential primary. He joins fellow CBC members Barbara Lee of California, Al Green of Texas and Alcee Hasting of Florida in supporting Harris’ candidacy. Missouri will play a critical role in the early nomination process.
