STATEMENT BY CONGRESSMAN WM. LACY CLAY (D) MISSOURI REGARDING EPA ANNOUNCEMENT OF FINAL REVISED RECORD OF DECISION FOR WEST LAKE LANDFILL SUPERFUND SITE IN BRIDGETON, MISSOURI

“West Lake cleanup is a huge victory for our long-suffering community and a giant step towards environmental justice.”

NOTE: The following, in its entirety, is a first-person

statement by Congressman Wm. Lacy Clay (D) Missouri

WASHINGTON, DC – “As the first Member of Congress to call for the removal of nuclear waste from West Lake landfill, today’s final announcement by the EPA of a cleanup is a huge victory for our long-suffering community and it is a giant step towards long-delayed environmental justice.

As I have said from the beginning, this nuclear waste, which dates back to the Manhattan Project, is a 76-year old problem.  The United States government created this waste and we have a responsibility to clean it up.

I especially want to salute the courage and sacrifice of Just Moms STL, the Missouri Coalition for the Environment and the many citizen environmental advocates whose dogged determination and faith have led us to this landmark decision that will keep our community safe.”
